MIA CEU Program Adds new Course for Architects - “Natural Stone Tile: An Overview” is 12th MIA course approved by AIA

The Marble Institute of America is proud to announce that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has approved “Natural Stone Tile: An Overview” as a CEU course available to MIA members who are part of the MIA’s CEU Program. The MIA CEU Program helps participating MIA members connect with architects and design professionals by certifying them as approved providers of CEU courses. The MIA works to register these courses with the AIA and IDCEC (a consortium of interior design associations). “Natural Stone Tile: An Overview” is the 12th such course to be recognized.

MIA Introduces New CEU Course on Natural Stone Thin Veneer

Following nine months of extensive work, a MIA CEU subcommittee (chaired by MIA Past President Scott Lardner, Rocky Mountain Stone) introduced a new CEU course on Natural Stone Thin Veneer. This one-hour class is designed to provide you with a basic understanding of a relatively new application (thin veneer) of a product (natural stone). Explore natural stone's beauty and durability on structures from around the world. Learn the history and best uses for different types of stone veneer, how thin stone is produced, and common application techniques and opportunities. This course is part one of a two-part natural stone thin veneer series.
Learning Objectives include:
1. Explore the history and best uses for different types of veneer.
2. Learn how natural stone thin veneer is made and what product variations are available.
3. Discover the advantages over anchored veneer and manufactured stone.
4. Learn about application techniques and opportunities.
This course is approved by AIA, ASID, IDC, IDCEC, IIDA, and ASLA.
Lardner commented, "it was a great collaberative effort with nine prominent companies involved. This CEU is the sixth class introduced by the MIA to expand the educational opportunities available to the design community about natural stone."

Day 2 of StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas 2012 is in the Books

Day 2 of StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas 2012 is complete and it was another eventful day for the MIA. Here are the highlights:
- Britishstoneworks of Lakewood, OH won the Grande Pinnacle Award during the annual MIA Awards Luncheon for its Spirit of the Ocean Fountain project outside of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse in Santa Barbara, CA. Congratulations to Nick, Nathan and the rest of their dynamic team. Eddie Mendoza of All American Stone and Tile Care won the MIA Scholarship Award, Daniel Catania of Miller Druck won the MIA Natural Stone Craftsman of the Year award, and Ron Busse won the MIA Migliore Award for Lifetime Achievement. In all, over 15 awards were handed out.
- MIA's Safety Committee met to review its 2011 accomplishments which included recognition from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for excellence in service to the industry. The entire stone industry will benefit from four new programs that will be introduced in 2012 - stay tuned for details.
- The MIA CEU Committee (chaired by Josh Levinson of Artistic Tile) met with over 30 companies in attendance. Two new powerpoint presentations were introduced for use in 2012. The MIA and its outstanding member speakers gave over 140 CEU presentations in 2011 and have laid the groundwork to expand for many years to come.
- Michael Twiss of Columbia Stone became the 2012 MIA President at the MIA Annual Meeting. He received overwhelming support for his Member Get a Member Campaign.
- Outgoing MIA president G.K. Naquin completed his term with a spectacular President's Reception in his suite at the Mandalay Bay overlooking the strip. G.K. - thank you for your vision, new ideas, and years of service to the MIA!
